Since leaving the White House, our Forever First Couple has been scoring book deals, doctorate degrees and now Oscar nominations.

Former President Barack Obama and First Ladt Michelle, has landed an Oscar nomination for their Netflix documentary, American Factory. The documentary was released under their production company, Higher Ground, launched in 2018.

Directed by Academy-nominated and Emmy Award-winning directors Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert, the documentary “takes a deep dive into a post-industrial Ohio, where a Chinese billionaire opens a new factory in the husk of an abandoned General Motors plant and hires two thousand blue-collar Americans”, according to a Netflix press release.

Glad to see American Factory’s Oscar nod for Best Documentary. It’s the kind of story we don’t see often enough and it’s exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve with Higher Ground. Congrats to the incredible filmmakers and entire team,” Barack tweeted.

Michelle posted a picture on her Instagram with her herself, her husband and the two directors.

“I couldn’t be happier that Julia Reichert, Steven Bognar, and all of the incredible people behind #AmericanFactory have been nominated for the Best Documentary Oscar,” she posted as a caption. “What Julia and Steve capture on film is at times painful, at times exhilarating, but always thoughtful and always real—exactly the kind of story Barack and I wanted to lift up with Higher Ground Productions.”
