“Being a Guinness World Records title holder now feels so exciting and it’s such an incredible accomplishment for me… it’s something I can share with my family and generations years from now.”

Who knew crowns could break records? Well, a melanin afro crown can! Simone Williams, 32,  has broken the Guinness World record for the largest afro on a woman. According to Guinness World Records, Simone’s afro is 20.5 cm (8.07 in) tall, 22.5 cm (8.85 in) wide, and 1.48 m (4 ft 10 in) in circumference.

She told Guinness World Records she was inspired by the previous record holder, Aevin Dugas, who held the title for eight years.

“At the time, I didn’t think my hair was anywhere close to hers, she was goals,” Williams said in a press release. “But I was so happy to see that she was recognized and there was a chance for others to be recognized too.”

When she was notified that she broke the record, she said it took about 10 minutes to process the information.

“Being a Guinness World Records title holder now feels so exciting and it’s such an incredible accomplishment for me… it’s something I can share with my family and generations years from now,” she said.

Williams started her natural hair journey nine years ago because she wanted to save money she spent at the hair salon to help with the costs of moving into her first apartment.

Learning to take care of her hair was a difficult process, but through practice and consistency, Williams managed to find a healthy routine that worked.

“I normally wash my hair weekly using very little sulfate-free shampoo. I use a lot of conditioner because it helps detangle my hair. I section my hair into 4 twists while in shower,” she told Guinness World Record.

After washing it, she moisturizes it and uses olive oil gel to retwist it into about 8 smaller twists, and then letting it air dry.

Williams dropped a few jewels for people who want to go natural.

“Always be patient with your hair. It’s a process and every day is not going to be a perfect hair day,” she told Guinness Record Worlds. “Research and learn what works best for your hair type.”

Also, limit the number of products you use. Williams said she only uses 3 products and tries a new product once in a while.

When asked if she would consider any other records, she said told Guinness World Record, “Maybe 2 afro puffs, like pigtails – I love that style too”.

 Congratulations to this Royal Woman!
