Ancestors We Did It (Again): Introducing Madam Vice President Kamala Harris

It’s official! Kamala Harris is our new Vice President of the United States. Harris was sworn in with President Joe Biden Wednesday (Jan. 20) morning at the 59th inauguration. Harris is the first female, first Black, and first South Asian vice president.

Vice President Harris is the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father.

“Ready to serve,” she wrote in her first tweet on the official Vice President Twitter account.

Vice President Harris was sworn in by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor,  who is HERstory herself as the first Latina justice on the high court.

The historical moment was not lost on spectators such as White House correspondent, Yamiche Alcindor who tweeted, “What a moment for our country and for women of color in particular. The first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor, administers the oath of office to Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black, South Asian, and woman to hold this office.”

The hashtag #RepresentationMatters was sealed and confirmed as millions of Black women and girls watched someone- who looked like them- take the second-highest office in the world.

A Black woman is the Vice-President of the United States,” one woman tweeted. These tears are real and my hope for America is even more so. #KamalaHarris

The moment was also not lost on the Asian community.

First Divine Nine

Lawmakers, activists, and others celebrated the groundbreaking moment, including the Vice President’s sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

“Today we witnessed one of the most historic moments in the history of this country,” the sorority tweeted.  “The swearing-in of our FIRST Female Vice President of these United States of America. The glass ceiling has been broken!! WE SALUTE YOU MADAM VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS!”

The Divine 9 community has been rallying around the office since she announced her campaign run. The hashtag #chucksandpearls went viral on Wednesday, as AKAs, Deltas, and Zetas rocked their best pearl, and chuck set to honor the new VP.

And don’t tell us HBCUs do not prepare you for life!

Harris, of course, is a graduate of Howard University. After the ceremony, the Vice President was escorted to the White House by her alma mater, the HU Showtime Marching Band.

Howard University Student Association shouted our their presidential alumni in a tweet, “Congratulations to Vice President Kamala D. Harris! From Howard to the White House, excellence in truth and service will always prevail!”

Vice President Harris has already been putting in work. Immediately after the inauguration ceremony, she swore in three Democratic senators, Alex Padilla, California’s first Latino senator; Georgia’s Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff.
