Praise the ancestors! Finally, we have a date on when we can return to Wakanda. On Monday, Marvel revealed the release date for the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s Black Panther movie. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premieres July 8, 2022.

There had been speculation on whether Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa character was going to be recast. Boseman died last August at the age of 43 after battling stage 3 colon cancer.   But in a nutshell, the answer is no. There will be no new T’Challa.

Instead, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says Marvel will honor Boseman by not recasting the character he has immortalized for generations to come.

“His portrayal of T’Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past. It’s for that reason we will not recast the character”, Feige said in an article published by USA Today

Black Panther director, Ryan Coogler says working without Boseman is the hardest thing he has had to do professionally.

“This is without a question the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my professional life,” Coogler said. Without question. This one hurts, but it’s also incredibly motivating. When you look back on how this guy lived his life and how he moved through this world and what he gave to us.”

However, the sequel is promising to pay homage to Boseman’s legacy.

Winston Duke, Daniel Kaluuya, Daniel Kaluuya, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright are all expected to return for the sequel. Wakanda Forever is part of MCU Phase 4 movies.
