All hail Lauryn Hill…

The sweetest thing we’ve ever known is a dope MC from New Jersey.

It’s official, Lauryn Hill is the first female rapper to become diamond-certified.  Her 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill reached diamond status, on Feb. 16. The milestone marks 10 million in sales, according to RIAA. 23 years later and this album still gives us all the vibes and gives me all the nostalgia.

Track 4: “To Zion”

Hill wrote the song to her unborn son Zion. She sings about her pregnancy, and the joy he brings her. I enjoyed the song because it reminded me of the talks I’ve had with my mother about her being pregnant with me. She told me she loved me the moment she found out she was pregnant with me. The song is a musical representation of the happiness only a woman can feel the first time she feels her child move during her pregnancy.

Track 5: “Doo-Wop (That Thing)”

One of my favorites on the album where she talks about respect for ourselves. The song is about self-worth and self-respect for men and women. “The track is a warning to both men and women to not be exploited by one another for “that thing”, meaning sexual intercourse.” She speaks to both genders, so they can have a personal feel on her message (self-respect).

Track 12: “Nothing Even Matters”

Does nothing even matter when you’re happily in love with someone? Featuring D’Angelo, this song is about the true meaning of love.  I love this song on this album because it gives you a feel of emotions. It’s an unapolgetic admittance of one’s feelings  toward one another.

Track 13: “Everything Is Everything”

Although, we know the saying ‘everything is everything‘, but what does it really mean? It means just what it says. Meaning that everything right now is going the way it’s supposed to. Hill wrote this song to embark on her journey by finding herself after the end of her relationship with Wyclef Jean, the Fugees breakup, and a short loss of faith in God. This song gives me empowerment thoughts and reminds that everything will soon fall into place.

Track 15: “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”

Personally, the most beautiful song on the album. Hill sings about can’t taking her eyes off of someone because of the beauty they portray. “You’re just too good to be true”, shows that she loved someone hard, and was infatuated with their presence. I love this song because the lyrics are beautiful. I know this song will automatically start playing in my head when I find my special someone. It was obvious Lauryn Hill was in love when she wrote this album. All the songs are meaningful, with heartful lyrics and passion.
