Motherland rise up!

The highest honor in the pageant beauty world was granted to a gorgeous, brown-skinned African woman.

Zozibini Tunzi was crowned Miss Universe Sunday night, beating out first-runner up,  Miss Mexico, Sofía Aragón and Miss Puerto Rico, Madison Anderson, the second runner-up.

In her closing remarks, Tunzi touched on the importance of touching girls to be leaders.

“I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time,” she said. “Not because we don’t want to, but because what society has labeled women to be. I think we are the most powerful beings in the world.”

Tunzi also touched on the importance of representation.

“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me with my kind of skin and my kind of hair was never considered to be beautiful,” she said. “And I think that time stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine.”

The 2019 Miss Universe competition took place at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Steve Harvey hosted the pageant for the fifth time. After the competition, Tunzi signed the inside of his green and gold jacket.

“It says Miss Universe, you going to be the first one, point your name right there,” Harvey told the newly-crowned pageant queen.
