Remember when we first told you about Sephora’s racial bias problems? Well, it looks like the company is practicing what they preached. Black-owned beauty brands are finally going to be seen on the shelves of Sephora. The company has just welcomed its first Black-owned clean beauty brand called Lys Beauty. The brand was introduced to Sephora’s website on Feb. 19. The new addition follows backlash the company received for lacking diversity in their product and staffing.
Their company’s mission is to “empower, inspire, and awaken your most confident self through strict formulation standards that help reshape the way consumers approach clean beauty,” according to Lys’s website.
Brother Vellies founder Aurora James started the 15 percent which encouraged companies to house at least 15 percent of their shelf space with Black-owned companies. Sephora was the first major brand to hop on it. This, tying in with the backlash they received over their racial controversy, urged Sephora to shelf Lys Beauty.
What Is Lys Beauty About?
Lys Beauty is cruelty-free, vegan, and purely plant-based. The line features a serum primer, setting powder, bronzer, lip oil treatments, and blush. But their most famous product is the Triple Fix Serum Foundation. This “must-have complexion hero” is available in an extensive 35 shades and the foundation is loaded with nourishing ingredients like Ashwagandha, Hyaluronic Acid, Turmeric, and Avocado Oil!
Founder and CEO Tisha Thompson takes pride in delivering “clean product and individuality. She started Lys Beauty in hopes to inspire and empower.
“I’ve always been a big believer in finding what makes you you, and truly standing in it, and that feeling of total empowerment is what I hope to bring to the beauty industry,” Thompson told Good Morning America. The makeup artist turned businesswoman has been in the beauty industry for over 15 years. While working at MAC, she developed a vision to bring inclusivity to clean makeup.
Since launching, Lys Beauty continues to spread its message of positivity and self-love by providing affordable clean makeup for all!
Another Black-owned beauty brand that is celebrating its launch at Sephora is Danessa Myricks Beauty. The line is available on Sephora’s website and will be available in stores starting on April 9th.
Well, let’s hope companies like Lys and Danessa Myricks are one of many minority-owned brands the company will be introducing to their shelves in the future.
