High school girls are telling police in South Africa they can arrest them.
Why?
Because they’re protesting an unfair school policy there in which the black female students are being told to straighten their hair and not wear their natural afros.
And it gets worse. The black students in South Africa are also discouraged from speaking their native language. The staff implementing this policy are at Pretoria Girls School. Although the rule is in place, both students and alumni say it was not written in the school’s code of conduct.
The school has not commented on the situation but there is an ongoing investigation.
However, people have been expressing their outrage and support on social media using the hashtag #StopRacismAtPretoriaGirls and #PretoriaGirlsHigh :
Personally, I am not natural myself. Although I am taking a much-needed break from perms , 6 months strong and counting! But with a blow-out and wrap from my favorite Dominican salon and nightly coconut oil therapy, I look like a $80 plus retouch. However, hearing about this, like many other headlines in the news , makes me question whether its 2016, 1956 or 1856.
Nevertheless, RoyalTee Magazine stands behind the young queens of Pretoria and all black girls in their fight for the right to be- well- themselves.
