The new season of HBO’s Insecure is expected to put black men in the spotlight.

We’re looking forward to see what Issa, Molly and Lawrence have been up to in the upcoming series of the hit comedy. Although the brains behind the T.V. series have been ‘hush hush’ on the expectations, Issa Rae managed to spill a little tea with The Hollywood Reporter.

The 33 year-old lead actress isn’t giving away too many details, but says she did want to bring up a topic that all black women could relate to and that’s the black man.

“I don’t want to give anything away! But I love black masculinity as it relates to black women,” she explained. “I think that’s something interesting that we haven’t gotten a chance to explore yet and specifically toxic black male masculinity as it relates to black women. I’m trying to find a way to explore that and get a rounded storyline that isn’t preachy.”

As far as other themes in this season, Rae says its adulting in a new way. In previous seasons, we watched as the characters made mistakes, fixed them and made more mistakes, a common trait that usually happens in your 20s. However in the upcoming season, the characters are expected to be wiser for those shortcomings or ‘f**k ups’ as she calls them.

It’s been a long time. #InsecureHBO returns for Season 3 August 12 on @HBO.

“This season is about not acting like you’ve naïve anymore or that you don’t know better,” she said. ” So it is about, what does it look like to know better and to do better?”

Created in 2016, ‘Insecure’ follows the daily highs and lows of two black women while addressing social and racial issues of the African-American community in a quirky, bold and humorous manner. Filming for the latest season wrapped up this week.

During her interview, Rae also touched on her other responsibilities as creator and executive producer of the show. She says her brain never stops working and wished that her only job was to memorize lines.

“As a creator, you think you’re just going to create, but there are so many moving parts and so many business aspects,” she said. “So having to be business-minded while trying to be creative and not care what is going to sell is a lot. Sometimes I want to be in actor mode, not producer mode, or vice versa.”

However Rae shared that she did get a chance to play just the actress in the upcoming film, The Hate I Give. The drama, also starring A Wrinkle In Time’s Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall and Common, is based off an young adult novel about a prep school student who witnesses the fatal shooting of her bestfriend by a police officer.

“I was like, “Whoa, I don’t have to be here after my scene is done? I can just leave? I don’t have anything to do with the decisions? I have time in my trailer to just chill until they need me? That was just crazy to me but also really cool and made me want to do that again,” she recalled. “But conversely, I was like, “Oh, I didn’t write this, so I don’t really know these lines, so I need to study.”

The Hate I Give premieres in theaters on October 19, 2018.

Although she said HBO tends to take their time on future plans, Rae says she is already working on new shows. One is a comedy about a black, bisexual man called Him or Her and a show she is co-writing called the Sweet Life.

“It’s kind of like a black 90210 but not.”
