Within the first 10 minutes of the 91st Academy Awards HERstory was made!
Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler have been in the industry for years but it was their monumental, culture-changing work in Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ that secured their place in Oscars history. Both women were the first African-Americans to be nominated in their categories.
Carter started off the night by winning for Best Costume Design. The Howard graduate started her speech off by paying tribute to Spike Lee, who she worked with on School Daze, and credited him for giving her a start.
“Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king,” she said.
Carter has also worked on Amistad (1997) and Malcolm X (1992).
And if you have seen Creed, Moonlight or was whipped by Beyonce’s Lemonade video, then you’re already familiar with the phenomenal work of Hannah Beachler. The Wright State University graduate is now the first African-American to win an Academy Award in the category for Best Production Design for her work in bringing Wakanda to life.
“I’m honestly overwhelmed by Black women winning the awards they deserve,” Beachler said.
Congratulations ladies! Keep inspiring us!
