All this little Black girl wanted to be for her birthday was Peter Parker. Professional photographer, Diamond Jackson, snapped pictures of her three-year-old daughter, Rose, in a Spiderman costume for her birthday. The images have gone viral. It’s a small contribution to the melanin representation narrative that we all love.

Jackson is the mother of three and owner of Rae’s Bleu Rose Photography in Mobile, Alabama. The three pictures shared on the Instagram page show Rose dressed head to toe in a Spiderman costume and crouching like the famous Marvel character on the edge of a building, expertly edited in by her mother. Since being shared on Jan. 14, the post has been liked over 51K times and has inspired coffee mugs and artwork

Rose is the youngest, her sisters are ages 10 and 5.  Out of her daughters, Jackson says Rose is the only one who is in tune with the Marvel universe. She tells RoyalTee Magazine that her daughter saw the Spiderman character on a bookbag and has been in love with him ever since.

“I have not noticed her loving any other character really,” she says.

But what sticks out the most about the pictures are the toddler’s small Afro puffs. As a photographer, Jackson likes to incorporate natural hair in her work, especially with her own children. Many of the pictures on her Instagram page show her daughters rocking their natural fros and puffs.

“Self-love is one of the biggest lessons taught in our home,” Jackson says. “I remind them every day how they are so beautiful, I compliment their different features, and of course I allow them to embrace their natural hair.”

Although the naturalista mood seems intentional, Jackson says it is not but she is glad it comes out that way, if it means that it inspires one more Black girl out there to love her hair.

“I think people see the photos I take of my daughters and can relate, so they bring their beautiful babies with natural hair to me.”
