As COVID-19 continues to spread, schools across the nation are closing their campuses to preserve the health of their students, staff, and faculty. Students are back home and schools are trying to maintain some form of normalcy as they transition their courses online for their students to continue as they finish out the rest of the semester at home.

But as students adjust and cope with this pandemic, it’s important to acknowledge this isn’t a vacation. Even though logically we all can understand this measure was taken for everyone’s safety, such a drastic and abrupt change can still leave students of all ages feeling like their lives have been uprooted and disrupted.

“This has screwed up my year. I was enjoying my freshman, having fun hanging out, doing what I need to do in class, and getting ready for the outdoor season (track). Now I have to do online work and wait until next December or January to race indoors next year,” says Nick Nunnally, a student-athlete freshman at Mount St. Mary’s University.

It’s also equally important for them [students] to maintain some form of normalcy. Going from classroom settings to virtual interaction can be difficult. And if you have trouble with staying focus and discipline, it can be a nightmare.

“…it’s important to acknowledge this isn’t a vacation.”

Getting in the loop of creating a routine can be beneficial.

“I honestly don’t feel like working out sometimes, because it’s like what’s the point? I have nothing to work for, nothing to show,” Nunnally says. “But I go out and do it, so I don’t pay for it during the next circuit season, I don’t want to let down my teammates and coaches by coming back out of shape and out of breathe. I do it for next season, I do it for the seniors who showed me the way, I do it so we can win an indoor and outdoor championship for our seniors.”

Each student is facing their own challenges as they adjust and attempt to cope with the upheaval of their lives during the pandemic. As you try to find a way to navigate through your current situation, make sure to lockdown have a support system, whether that’s family or friends. We’re in this together~
