Black History Month is over but let’s continue to support local Black artists year-round. Quarantine has taken a toll on everyone, especially artists who rely on public viewing and social interaction to share their artwork. Many cities, like Atlanta, have been hit with a soaring number of COVID-19 cases, keeping many brilliant young artists inside. I am here to shine a much-needed light on these creative minds ranging from all ages, all of who deserve their flowers!

1. Corey Barksdale

Born in Nashville and Atlanta-raised, Barksdale is an artist who specializes in large colorful mural pieces! He was introduced to color and form by his grandmother who was a quilt artist. His mother was also a talented designer. He has a love for abstract expression and African American art!

2. MONKPANDA

Luq, also known as MONKPANDA, is a rising street artist, graphic designer, and chalk artist! He has competed and showcased in many art galleries and competitions across Metro Atlanta. Luq received his BA in Graphic Design from the Art Insitute of Atlanta in 2013. He is currently working along side and traveling with Georgia Chalk Artist Guild creating 3D art and educating youth in visual art studies!

3. Emmy 

Emmy Marshall, aka ‘paintedbyemmy,’ is an Atlanta artist who specializes in contemporary abstract paintings. His work has been described as spontaneous and organic. He uses unconventional tools like thread, table mats, shoes, and more! Emmy inspires to create artwork that invokes the feeling of freedom, peace, and joy.

4. HuggnTreez

Based in Atlanta, HuggnTreez is a prolific visual artist. His art is very vibrant, colorful, and truly captures the heart and soul of Atlanta culture. When chatting with the young artist via Instagram, he described his work “as an expression of life itself, whether that be social issues, spirituality, history, or just day to day life.” HuggnTreez is someone who we should definitely keep an eye out for!

5. Elise 

Born in Chicago, the beautiful Elise is an Atlanta-based painter who creates artwork that encompasses visions of herself and abstract expressionism. Her work is often inspired by poetry and social issues. This artist is steadily on the rise and deserves all accolades!

6. Debbi Snax

An artist who could definitely use more recognition, Debbi Sanx is a mural painter and artist of the skin! She is a very talented tattoo artist working out of Memorial Tattoo here in Atlanta! This past year she has received well-deserved recognition due to her non-traditional approach to tattooing as a Black woman. Shout out to Debbi Snax for breaking stereotypes in the male-dominated tattoo industry!

7.  KingCapt 

Next, we have the talented Chekier aka KingCapt! Originally from Queens and a FAMU graduate, this Atlanta artist will capture all your best angles! He started in the photography business two years ago. Chekier now specializes in self-portraits and events videography.

8. Stacey Brown

A 52-year-old artist based in Atlanta whose works stunningly captures the soul of the African American community. Brown has been in the art industry since 1986 while attending the Art Institute. He went the graphic design route and was a success, but felt as if something was missing. In 2000, Brown began his fine arts career and has been on the rise since. He often uses watercolor on glass and canvas to create soulful landscapes and jazz scenes. Now he also specializes in interior and movie set design!

9. BLKGRLFLY

Razia O’Bryant, Ms. BLKGRLFLY, is a visual artist in all things vibrant, bold, unconventional, and cultural. Her artwork encompasses both feminine and masculine energy, having an inherent rebellion in her brush strokes. The goal of her art is to transfer her imagination to the tangible world and to reach as many people as possible. O’Bryant has a brand called FLY Studios where she transforms her artwork into wearable lifestyle collectibles that embody her vision.

10. Essence Ransome 

Last but certainly not least, we have the talented photographer Essence Ransome! Ransome began her career in photography seven years ago as a hobby though over time manifested into her passion. Essence strives to capture and reveal the unique qualities in every photo while putting her own spin on them.

These are just a few of the many talented artists in Atlanta. Artists like these contribute to the eccentric, vibrant, soulful, spirit of Atlanta. They embodied the voices and culture of the city in their art and it’s beautifully reflected all throughout the streets.
