In some form or another, astrology’s popularity has always had its roots in uncertainty. In the US, astrology saw a similar uptick in popularity during the 1960s and ‘70s, according to The Atlantic. The 5th Dimension song, “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” serves as evidence of that. This era also marks a turbulent time in American history. The civil rights movement was still chugging full speed ahead. At the same time, the Vietnam War sparked a whole other wave of protests throughout the country.
Now, astrologers like Aliza Kelly believe that the events that ensued during Donald Trump’s presidency are to blame.
“In the Obama years, people liked astrology,” Kelly said in an interview with The New Yorker. “In the Trump years, people need it.”
Astrology and the Internet
Not only do times of uncertainty play a factor in astrology’s newfound popularity, but so does the internet. The internet grants unlimited access to information to just about everything. This means it is easier for tech-savvy Millennials and Gen Zers than it was for their predecessors to fall down an astrology rabbit hole.
“Astrologers are always trying to boil down these giant concepts into digestible pieces of knowledge,” astrologer Chani Nicholas said in an interview with The Atlantic. “The kids these days and their memes are like the perfect context for astrology.”
Astrology memes range from what type of friend you are as a Virgo to how you interact with Aries. Even nonbelievers may find themselves as a part of the new internet community.
