Last week, Cicely Tyson, a pillar in the entertainment industry, received her induction into the 2020 TV Hall of Fame. Shonda Rhimes inducted Tyson herself during the 25th celebration at the Saban Media Center in Hollywood and calls the 95 year-old actress “a dream fulfilled.”

The Harlem native never took roles just for the money which did cause her to experience some struggles. But she prides herself in accepting roles of importance and ones she believes in such as “The Help” and “Roots”.
Throughout her acting career, Tyson has received many more awards and achievements. In 1974, she portrayed a young slave in the “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman”, making her the first African American actress to receive and Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Television Movie.
Her performance in “The Trip to Bountiful” earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in Leading Role. In 1982, she received the Women in Film Crystal Award and six years later, in 1988, she earned the Candace Award for Distinguished Service from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women.
Recently, she recieved praise in the Tyler Perry’s “A Fall from Grace”, which hit over 26 million streams on Netflix since it’s debut last month.

Tyson’s career spans over 60 years and she has no plans on slowing down.
“The reason why I have been in this universe as long as I have been is because he’s not ready for me,” Tyson told Time magazine. “When I’ve completed my job, he’ll take me away. We have to honor this blessed gift that we have. That’s what keeps you going. Keeps your mind fluid—your heart, your whole being. You can’t just stop, because that will be the end of you.“
Mrs. Tyson is a trailblazer who has paved the way for black women in the entertainment industry. We admire her for her perseverance, dedication to her craft and the outstanding roles she has played and roles that are to come.
