Compton Mayor Aja Brown is stepping down from politics to get ready for motherhood.
Family over politics! Just a month after announcing her run for Congress, the California democrat withdraws her name from the race for “bundle” of reasons. She’s pregnant! The 35 year-old one officially announced the news last week in a Instagram video with her husband, Van Brown.
Brown, grinning uncontrollably in the car, as her husband spills the beans. “So after some fourteen years of marriage, my wife and I are pregnant,” he says.
Aja quickly jumps in and says, “We? I’m pregnant,” she laughs.
Correcting himself future Daddy Brown jokes that he was actively involved.
“God is really good,” Aja says. “We are excited to be welcoming our own little bundle of love, a little baby Brown.”
But the exciting news also comes with a slight drawback. To prepare for her unborn child, the California mayor announced last week ( April 4) that she will be withdrawing from California’s 44th congressional race.
In a statement Young writes: We [ Young and her husband] are overjoyed at the opportunity to become parents and look forward to starting a family. To date, one of my highest honors has been dedicating my time and life to serving my community. However at this point in my life, my family commitments supersede my ability to expand my level of service.

The news comes a week [ March 30] after Stacey Dash announced her own withdrawal from the congressional race. The actress, former Fox News commentator and avid Trump supporter would have been running against Young as a Republican. Young even cited the “Clueless” actress as her “motivating” factor to run. Dash’s campaign would’ve focused on improving the lives of people she claims the Democratic have been forgetting for decades. But the 51 year-old rescinded her candidacy explaining in a statement that “the bitterness surrounding our political process, participating in the rigors of campaigning, and holding elected office would be detrimental to the health and wellbeing” of her family.
I have released this statement on my campaign. It’s not an easy one. pic.twitter.com/HvKuUad48F

Both women were aiming to replace Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-San Pedro). Although both of have withdrawn from the race, according to the LA Times, their names will remain on the ballot. Needless to say, there won’t be a girl fight for the Capitol Hill chair between these two, at least not this year.
In 2013, Brown became the youngest mayor in Compton at the age of 31. She was re-elected last June for her second term. Her ‘New Vision for Compton’ encompasses 12-key issues centered around family values, economic development, quality of life, and infrastructural growth. Since taking office, Brown has launched policy changes to reduce the infamous gang crime in the city, human trafficking and other illicit activities. She’s also credited for reducing unemployment in the city by 50% and is the recipient of the 2016 John F. Kennedy New Frontier Award.
Brown is a graduate of the University of Southern California.
