Young Black people are receiving disturbing text messages telling them they have been selected to pick cotton at a plantation. The messages started shortly after Election Day.

The text message says in part, ” You have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation. Be ready at 12am November 13, 2024 SHARP with your belongings. Our exclusive slave will come get you in a brown van, be prepared to be searched upon arrival to plantation. No personal belongings allowed this is a fresh start.

Reports have been received from at least 30 states.

he NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson released the following statement on Thursday, condemning the messages.  

“The unfortunate reality of electing a president who, historically, has embraced and at times encouraged hate, is unfolding before our eyes,” Johnson said. “These messages represent an alarming increase in vile and abhorrent rhetoric from racist groups across the country, who now feel emboldened to spread hate and stoke the flames of fear that many of us are feeling after Tuesday’s election results.”

Trump administration spokesperson Karoline Leavitt shared with CNN the Trump  presidential “campaign has absolutely nothing to do with these text messages

The FBI, Department of Justice and FCC are investigating. The FBI said in a statement that they are “aware of the offensive and racist text messages sent to individuals around the country and is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities on the matter.”

In the meantime, if you have gotten this message officials are encouraging people to report them to local law enforcement authorities.
