When midnight strikes on Jan. 1, 2022, you may Crystal Lee Brown toasting with her bubbly, but it won’t be the beginning of new resolutions. Instead, the Daytime Emmy-nominated actress is focused on yearlong intentions.
“I threw New Year’s resolutions out the window many years ago,” Brown, 34, tells RoyalTee. “Now, I set intentions for every aspect of my life, and I do that every quarter. I hold myself accountable to take the steps necessary to fulfill those intentions. I carry them over each quarter if there is still more work to be done to accomplish it.”
This holiday season, the Temple University graduate and Philadelphia native is focused on family. “The holidays are all about love, feeding the soul, and gratitude,” she says, “I especially love the change in the season and great food!”
Brown has been making her moves and shakes in Hollywood for a few years now. In 2019, she received her first Daytime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Digital Drama Series for her role as Tamera on the hit series Giants, which streams on Issa Rae’s YouTube Channel. Brown’s talents could also be seen in the award-winning film, Judas and The Black Messiah and if you look close enough, she’s not so hidden in 2016’s Hidden Figures.

Watch Crystal in Starz’s Hightown
These days, she currently plays a prison physical therapist in Starz’s crime drama, Hightown. The series features a diverse cast which includes The Good Wife’s Monica Raymund, Prison Break’s Amaury Garrido and Superfly’s Atkins Estimond.
“I was instantly drawn to this role because of the writing,” she says. “Creator and writer Rebecca Cutter laid the foundation for Janelle as a character. Once I had a handle on who she was, I immediately binge-watched Season 1 of Hightown to dive into the world and understand how the other characters operated in it. I was hooked after watching the first episode and did my best work on my interpretation of Janelle to land the role.”
