Just call them the real life East Compton Clovers.
This past Sunday, the cheerleaders of Savannah State University Tigers made history when they became the first HBCU (historically black college and university) team ever to take home a first place prize at the Cheerport Nationals in Atlanta, the largest cheer competition in the country.
The 13-member squad (includes one guy) first their debut at the competition in 2013 and finished in 8th place. But as Savannah State senior cheerleader, Morgan Moore tells the city’s local television station, WJCL, they needed some time to tighten their skills up.
“We have a lot of great members on this squad and a great program,” Moore tells WJCL. “We just wanted to make sure to better it, improve it and make it the best we can, it’s just a great achievement for our squad and our school.”
Now as far as the Tigers’ similarities to the Clovers in ‘Bring it On’, there was no ‘ugly redhead’ with a camera taping any of their cheers and we do not recall any reports of them popping up at other cheerleaders’ football games throwing those same cheers at them. Now we want to sing the ‘ Hey Mickey ‘ song!
Nevertheless, we’re super proud of the Savannah State Tigers!
