RIP the laughing crying emoji. You were beloved by many. But, the decision is in! Gen Z has declared that the ? emoji is not cool anymore.

What Changed?

According to Apple, the most popular emoji in 2017 was the laughing crying emoji. So what changed? Why is not cool anymore?

Millennials and boomers started using it. And Gen Z is so done with it.

21-year old Walid Mohammed said, “I use everything but the laughing emoji,” I stopped using it a while back because I saw older people using it, like my mom, my older siblings and just older people in general.”

“Seventeen-year-old Xavier Martin called the ? emoji “bland” and said “not too many people” his age use it.”

Ouch! Millennials deemed uncool by Gen Z, again!

Gretchen McCulloch, author of “Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language,” provides us with an explanation. She says that describing digital laughter the same way for so many years makes it feel insincere. Eventually, it loses its meaning. That is why Gen Z is finding new ways to express laughter.

What is Gen Z using instead of ??

According to CNN business, Gen Zers like to assign their own meanings to emoji, share it with their friends, and then spread it through social media. The ? emoji has quickly replaced the ? emoji. The skull emoji represents the “I’m dead” or “I’m dying,” expression. It is used when something is really funny. Other viable options are the loudly crying emoji ?, “lol” or “lmao.”

However, not all millennials are ready to hop off this trend.

Julia Banim writes, “To me, the crying laughing emoji holds so much, says so much. And with such joyful simplicity.” I agree with the millennials on this one. It’s going to be hard to let this emoji go. My response to almost everything is ? ? ?. I’m hoping this emoji makes a comeback in the near future.
