The Los Angeles Lakers are NBA champions!

LeBron James led the team to their first championship win in a decade in Game 6, against the Miami Heat on Sunday with a final score of 106-93.

The win also secured James his 4th championship and the Lakers’ 17th NBA Final win, their first win since 2010.

This championship was historic in many respects. The Lakers became the first team in league history to go undefeated when taking a lead into the fourth quarter, going 57-0 between the regular season and the playoffs. They were also the first franchise to earn the No. 1 seed following a five-year postseason absence.

L.A. also endured the unprecedented scenario of a restart in an NBA bubble at Walt Disney World Resort to conclude a season stopped by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was also the team’s first monumental win since losing Kobe “Black Mamba” Bryant, his daughter, Gianna and seven others in a helicopter crash in January. Vanessa Bryant, Bryant’s widow congratulated the team for winning the NBA title but admitted she wishes he and their late daughter had been here to witness the victory.

“Wish Kobe and Gianna were here to see this,” she says.
