Ledisi left it all the field during Super Bowl 25’s pregame show, performing the Black national anthem.
The 52-year-old wore all white and was joined by 125 New Orleans high school students for the performance.
Written by James Weldon Johnson, the hymn is commemorated on its 125th anniversary. At the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show Press Conference on Thursday, Ledisi shared her feelings on singing the Black national anthem, saying she was “overwhelmed” and “honored.”
“I feel like I’m in alignment with greatness to stand in this moment and sing that song,” she said as reported by PEOPLE. “I just just keep thinking of this little girl from Holly Grove riding her bike, singing with her family singing, moving to Oakland, then going around the world on bigger stages and then coming back here full circle, back home wanting to show that I am from here too and to be given that moment.”
The New Orleans native and Grammy-nominated winning songstress joins Andra Day, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Alicia Keys and Mary Mary in performing the anthem at the SuperBowl.
