A French satirical magazine is receiving backlash for its depiction of Meghan Markle. The latest cover of Charlie Hebdo shows Queen Elizabeth grinning devilishly and kneeling on the 39-year-old’s neck.
The French headline translates into: “Why Meghan Markle left Buckingham Palace…Because ‘I couldn’t breathe.'”
Cover mocks George Floyd’s death
The gesture and words mock the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man who was killed after a former police officer, Derek Chauvin, kept his knee on his neck for more than eight minutes in May 2020. Floyd’s death has been a moving point for the Black Lives Matter movement. Floyd’s family was recently awarded a settlement of $27 million for his death.
British activist group, Black and Asian Lawyers For Justice, called the cover “white supremacist bullsh*t.”
“We should bring the smoke. Pimping #GeorgeFloyd trauma for profit. Outrageous, disgusting, fascistic racism,” the group tweeted.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s epic Oprah interview
The cover was released days after Prince Harry and Megan Markle’s epic interview with Oprah Winfrey. During the primetime exclusive, the couple discussed the not-so-nice side of royal life and touched on topics of depression, suicide, strained family relationships, toxic British media, colorism, and racism.
The bombshell was when Meghan told Oprah that Harry had been asked by an unnamed family member “how dark” their son Archie’s skin might be.” Harry did not disclose the details of that information, but he made a note to mention his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, nor his grandfather, Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh, did not make those comments.
The former Suits actress’s historic marriage to Prince Harry in 2018 gave us real-life princess vibes. And despite their hardships, Markle says they still have a happy ending.
“So, your story with the prince does have a happy ending,” Oprah asked the expecting mother. The couple announced they were having a girl during the interview- the second bombshell, but a good one!
“Yes,” Markle replied. “It’s greater than any fairy tale.”
