NBC veteran journalist, Kristen Welker, will make history when she moderates the second and final presidential debate between Former Vice President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump. This will be the first time a Black woman has moderated a presidential debate since journalist Carole Simpson in 1992 during the George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton showdown. Welker, 44, White House correspondent for NBC News since 2011.

- Welker is a Philly native and studied American history at Harvard
- Welker is biracial, her mother is Black and her father is White.
- Her mother is one of the first African American realtors to start her own company in Philadephia.
- Welker also quotes her mother as her ‘biggest supporter’. “From the moment I told my mother that I wanted to be a journalist, she has stood by my side every step of the way,” she Maria Shriver in an article published on their website. “My mom texts me after every single live report to cheer me on. I would not be the person or journalist that I am today if it were not for my mom.”
- Welker wanted to become a journalist to help people of different races and backgrounds communicate better.
- Before working for NBC, Welker worked for TV in Providence, Rhode Island, and Redding, California.
- Last January, she was named “Weekend Today” co-anchor.
