Its been a photo-op every afternoon for little Lola. That’s because everyday, her mother dresses her up. But its not the typical playhouse and tea time with mommy.
Everyday this month , Cristi Jones has been dressing her as 5 year-old daughter up as a historical black woman figure and taking vintage looking pictures of her. So far Lola has portrayed phenomenal Royal Women such as Harriet Tubman, Maya Angelou, Zora Neale Hurston , Toni Morrison, Mae Jemison , Josephine Baker and Angela Davis. She wants her daughter to remember women like and hopes the trials, tribulations and successes they experienced inspires Lola later in her life.
” They had the deck stacked against them and overcame and it’s just inspiring,” Jones tells Seattle station, KOMO. “You hope that your child grows up to do incredible things. Having examples just kind of guides them.”
But the lesson doesn’t end with the snapshots. Afterwards, she and Lola sit down for story time where she explains why each person is important . Lola tells KOMO her favorite portrait was that of Rosa Parks because she was brave.
Jones plans on doing the portraits every day this Black History Month. She is defiantly showing us that education doesn’t stop in the classroom. As parents its important to pick up where the teacher left off or skipped over.
