Online natural hair care advocate, NaturallyCurly debuted their annual runway show called “Texture on the Runway”, last Thursday. The show, showcased the diversity and variety of natural hair, at New York’s Spring 2019 Fashion Week.
In collaboration with Sally Beauty, NaturallyCurly partnered with natural hair care brands like Cantu Beauty, SheaMoisture, Carol’s Daughters and more, to feature their take on what it means to be a girl with coils. The runway show was full of versatile hair styles including dreadlocks and afros. Models were clothed in cultural prints and fashions that helped to magnify the beauty of natural hair.
This year’s event also marked the 20th anniversary for NaturallyCurly. For the past 20 years, Naturally Curly has been an online resource for all the textured hair girls. Debuting in 1998, NaturallyCurly was created as a community-based discussion board which has allowed many women to voice their frustration about the lack of representation for textured hair. Since then, NaturallyCurly has grown to attract many consumers and brands. The company also provides tips and reviews for products from established and rising brands.
Co-founder Michelle Breyer and recording artist and reality star, Amara La Negra, anchored the runway hair show. La Negra has always been very open about her love for natural hair and embracing natural beauty. She uses her platform to show that it is OK to be beautiful in your natural tresses. Her open opinion made her great a candidate for hosting this event. To close the show, La Negra gave an exciting performance to further celebrate.
“I saw a lot of pictures from the show, it was so amazing to me”, said Florida State student, Karia Grant-Williams. Williams has been on a natural hair journey for the past four years and was excited to see natural hair being celebrated during Fashion Week.
This multi-cultural event proved that diversity can be seen in all areas of fashion. NaturallyCurly’s runway show added volume and texture to New York’s Fashion Week. We hope to see more soon from this growing company.
