Betting on herself is paying off for Nicole Lynn. She is now the first Black woman agent to represent an NFL quarterback in the Super Bowl.

Lynn represents Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is gearing up to play the Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes II. Both men will be the first Black quarterbacks to face each other in the Super Bowl. However, working with Hurts wasn’t an opportunity that fell into her lap. Lynn took a chance and sent a direct message to Hurts on Instagram.

“Hey, have you picked an agent? If not, I’d love to link,” she wrote to him, according to Sports Illustrated. Hurts, who was still in the process of finding an agent, wanted to hear her out. She met with Hurts’s father for three hours, then with Hurts himself at his dad’s high school, all while being sick with the flu.

“People are going to doubt her because she’s a woman in this industry,” he told SI, about selecting Lynn to be his agent. “There was a sense of doubt. Why is she doing this? Can she represent a quarterback? What’s she going to do with him?”

He added, “I know the agent world in the NFL, and all sports, is very male-dominated. But Nicole was really on top of her stuff. She was prepared. She knew what she was talking about. She was hungry. And she was determined. And I feel that determination like that never rests. Once you come across such a determined individual, that just hits me a little differently.”

By the age of 26, the Agent You author signed her first client and is now Klutch Sports Group’s President of Football Operations, where she represents dozens of athletes, including Hurts, New York Jets Quinnen Williams, and recent recruits, Ali Gaye and Xavier Hutchinson of Iowa State.

Her other accomplishments include becoming the first female agent to represent NFL agency PlayersRep, which was later acquired by Lil Wayne’s Young Money APAA Sports Agency, in 2015.

“Any time someone thinks of an agent, they’re gonna think of me,” Lynn said, according to NBC News. “The first person that’s gonna come to their mind is a Black woman. I’m the Jerry Maguire — that is who I am.”

Super Bowl LVII will take place on February 12.
