Six months after Breonna Taylor’s shooting death in her Louisville home, the Jefferson County grand jury has indicted one officer, but not for his role in the 26-year-old’s emergency medical worker’s death.
Instead, former officer Brett Hankison was indicted on three counts of wanton endangerment, a low level charge for shots fired at residents in the apartment next door. The other officers involved in Taylor’s shooting-Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove- will not be charged in her death. Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron says the officers were “justified in their actions.”
Hankison was fired and Mattingly and Cosgrove were placed on administrative reassignment throughout the investigation.
Attorney Benjamin Crump called the ruling “outrageous and offensive.”
“With all that we knew about Breonna Taylor’s killing, how could a fair and just system result in today’s decision,” he says in a statement. “Her killing was criminal on so many levels…”

Black Lives Matter Cleveland released a statement condemning the Kentucky grand jury’s decision to not indict any police officers directly in connection with the death of Breonna Taylor.
“Black Lives Matter Cleveland stands in solidarity with the Family of Breonna Taylor and all others who are traumatized and grieve this senseless loss,” the statement says. “We struggle to understand why a society and government who repeatedly deny our humanity expects peace and diplomacy when peace and diplomacy never gets us justice.”
Breonna.. we are so sorry. You deserved better.
