A bit of Bidi Bidi Bom Bom magic is happening among lawmakers in Texas. A bill has been proposed to make “Selena Quintanilla Pérez Day” a state holiday. If approved the holiday would be designated on April 16, the late singer’s birthday.
Rep. Ana-Maria Ramos filed the bill on Tuesday. She told The Dallas Morning News if Texas can have an state holiday recognizing Confederate heroes (Jan. 19), then there should be a holiday honoring the “Queen of Tejano music.”
“I filed this bill so that young girls, like my daughter who grew up listening to Selena, can see themselves in strong women and women of accomplishment,” Ramos told the Dallas Morning News. “It’s important to send messages to our youth, especially young Latinos in Texas, that you will be recognized for your accomplishments.”
Selena Quintanilla was shot and killed in 1995 by the founder of her fan club and “friend”, Yolanda Saldívar. She was 23-years-old.
Now if you didn’t happen to grow up in a Latin household, chances are you first heard about Selena when Jennifer Lopez brought her back to life in the 1997 biopic Selena. And thanks to Selena, her songs are probably one of the few we know that we can sing and still not quite understand what she was saying ( hey we know ya’ll can relate!)
Selena’s legacy continues to live on through her various outlets such as Mac, who launched an entire makeup collection in 2016 inspired by the singer , and her family. A Netflix television series titled Selena: The Series is in the works. The series will tell the coming of age story of Selena and the choices and sacrifices her family made to make her dreams come true.
