We lied to you…we love “Sinners.”
Ryan Coogler’s supernatural thriller earns 16 Academy Award nominations, becoming the most-nominated film in Oscar history.
The movie surpasses long-standing records held by classics like Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s “All About Eve” (1950), James Cameron’s “Titanic” (1997) and Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” (2016) with 14 nominations.
Michael B. Jordan who played two roles as the twins, Smoke and Stack, is nominated for Best Actor. Delroy Lindo scores his first Oscar nomination at the age of 73 for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Delta Slim. Wunmi Mosaku received first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Annie, the Hoodoo priestess and Smoke’s love interest.
Sinners also marks a significant milestone for women in film. Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the film’s cinematographer, became the first woman of color ever nominated in the Best Cinematography category. She is also the first Filipino woman nominated in the category.
Production designer Hannah Beachler, is the only Black woman nominated in the category. Beachler has already won an Oscar for her work on “Black Panther.”
“Sinners” received nominations across nearly every major Oscars category, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Hair and Makeup, Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Casting, a newly introduced category.
Coogler is the second Black filmmaker nominated in the same year for producing, directing and original screenplay, after Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” (2017). He is also the third filmmaker in history to reach this milestone and seventh Black director to receive a best director nomination, according to Variety.
The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Whether Sinners converts its historic nominations into wins remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear:
The film has cemented its place in cinematic history.
