Black Panther fans, get ready: The Walt Disney Co. has announced a new, five-year television partnership with director Ryan Coogler to continue the #WakandaForever legacy.
Coogler and the team at his multi-media company, Proximity Media, will develop new television series for the entertainment conglomerate. So far, a Wakanda-based drama series to be made available on Disney+ is in the works.
“Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation,” said Bob Iger, Executive Chairman at The Walt Disney Company. “With Black Panther, Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful, and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment.

More To Come For This Young Director
It is unknown when the series will be available to stream; however, Marvel Studios has already announced that fans of the franchise can expect a Black Panther sequel by July 2022. The second film will not feature the main character, T’Challa. The decision was made to honor Chadwick Boseman’s legacy, who died last year after his battle with colon cancer.
“Chadwick’s passing is absolutely devastating,” Kevin Feige, Chief of Marvel Studios, said in a statement. “He was our T’Challa, our Black Panther, and our dear friend… He embodied a lot of amazing people in his work, and nobody was better at bringing great men to life… Now he takes his place alongside them as an icon for the ages.”
Telling Black Stories Through Black Voices
Coogler’s resumé has always reflected the Black experience in various ways. He also directed the movies “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed”, both of which give visibility to an often underrepresented community.
“I wanted to tell epic stories, stories that felt big and fantastic,” Coogler said in a 2018 interview. “I wanted to make stuff that gave people that feeling – but I wanted to do it for people who look like me and people I grew up with.”
