“In terms of being a Royal Man, I think it’s about being able to be consistent, being able to be committed, being able to be transparent, honest… being able to show love.”
Three words to describe Jimel Atkins; motivating, humble and a true-go getter! The 25-year-old is one of the stars in OWN’s new television series, “David Makes Man”. The show follows the journey of a 14-year-old black boy who must decide between a life in the streets or a life in the books.
“The best part about the show, in my opinion, is that it’s unapologetically black,” Atkins says. “When you watch it, you’re going to know that these are people that you’ve seen in your community that have never been spotlighted in that way.”
Atkins attended the University of South Florida where he played football. He started his acting career in 2016 after realizing his true passion was not on the field, but in front of a camera.
“I started thinking about what I really wanted to do and it came to me like instant, I’m like, I used to act.”
“David Makes Man” premieres on the OWN network on Wednesday, August 14th.
