hairlove2If you  been on social media, no doubt you’ve come across the cute videos of black fathers with their children. The, much-needed,  positive imagery has been going viral on social media; from tea parties to daddy-daughter dates. But the most popular ones seem to be hairstyle videos. More and more black fathers are starting to tackle the bows, barrettes, braiding and plaiting. Its this empowering trend that inspired young filmmaker, Matthew Cherry , on his latest project, ” Hair Love”.

The  Pixer-style short film centers around the relationship of Stephen and his daughter, Zuri. When Zuri’s mother goes out for the evening to a big event, Stephen is left to take care of his daughter’s hairdo and he soon finds out styling is easier said than done.

Cherry is co-directing the short film. He says he hopes the project will not only inspire kids to take pride in their natural hair but also show that there are good black men who are amazing fathers, despite popular media suggesting otherwise. “Hair Love” will be his first animated project.

To complete the film, the team must reach a goal of $75k. A Kickstarter campaign has been launched to help in this effort.
