Real ‘hot girl’ ish here!

Megan Thee Stallion is officially the owner of her famous catchphrase “Hot Girl Summer.” After a two-year battle, the phrase has been officially trademarked. “Hot Girl Summer” immediately became popular following the 2019 summer anthem. It was used it to promote apparel, music, and food without the Houston rapper’s approval.

Megan started the trademarking process in 2019 under Gerben Law.

“It took Megan Thee Stallion [two plus] years of wrangling with the USPTO,” trademark attorney Josh Gerben tweeted, “but she is now the owner of a federal trademark registration for HOT GIRL SUMMER.” According to Gerben’s tweet, the registration was issued on Jan. 4, 2022.

In an interview with Allure, the Texas Southern graduate and new Revlon brand ambassador recalled seeing the slogan popping up in retail stores like Forever 21 and realized how marketable it was and sought to protect it.

“I really didn’t even know that it was gonna catch on how it did,” she told Allure in a 2019 interview.  “It was just me talking shit, telling everybody I was gonna be me for the summer, and they should be them too, like as free as they can be. When I saw Wendy’s and Forever 21 saying, ‘Hey, are you having a Hot Girl Summer?’ I was like, ‘Hell no, Forever 21, you’re going to have to pay me.’ But I just wanted to get it trademarked because it’s me. It’s my thing.”

The process received some pushback because of its immense popularity, which Gerben said could make it hard to register. Gerben told Girls United that someone had attempted to file ‘Hot Girl Summer’ months before Megan. But the Stallion prevailed. According to the official document posted on Gerben Law’s website, Megan filed trademarks for “Hot Girl Meg and “Tina Snow” under her very own Hot Girl Trademark Holdings, LLC.   Trademarks for “Hottie World,” “Hotties Helping,” Hotties Bootcamp” and “Hottieween” were also filed.

Cheers to Meg and other Royal women and men out there who go the extra mile to protect their brand.
