The same beauty brand that The Shark Tank referred to as “colorful cockroaches”  and slept on  is now on its way to becoming a half a million dollar business.

Frustration with the beauty industry and its representation for women of color  led founder and CEO, Melissa Butler to launch The Lip Bar back in 2012. Unlike other brands, The Lip Bar is 100% vegan and cruelty-free. Butler also uses the brand as a  platform to challenge women, specifically black women, to step out of their traditional  comfort zones and be bolder with their beauty.

“Everywhere I looked, beauty companies, magazines and the TV were telling women that you need to look like a specific thing to be considered beautiful. I hated that,” Butler says in a statement on her website. ” So I started making lipstick in my kitchen because I believed beauty shouldn’t compromise health and because I was determined to not change the way I looked to fit into some superficial or trendy beauty standard.”

The Lip Bar is now sold at 44 Target stores nationwide.  The company recently celebrated its 6th anniversary and they say they’re looking forward to many more!
