Howard University’s men’s and women’s golf teams are the latest HBCU team to be showcased in ESPN’s docu-series, Why Not Us. The eight-part docuseries follows the student-athletes and their coaches as they navigate the challenges and triumphs of an emerging Division I program.

The Bison golf team was created in 2020, thanks to NBA Superstar and golf enthusiast, Stephen Curry., who is also executive producing the series under his production company, Unanimous Media

In 2022, the Howard golf team cemented their name in elite company with the men’s team winning the 2022 MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Championship and 2022 PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) WORKS, and the women’s team winning the 2022 SAS Championship HBCU invitational and the 2022 Cardinal Classic.

The team is led by Sam Puryear, who was named Head Coach of both men’s and women’s programs in 2020. Puryear coached for 12 years at Queens University of Charlotte, Stanford, and Michigan State and is the first African-American head coach at a Power-5 university.

“Coach Sam and the incredible athletes that Why Not Us follows are true examples of why the need to grow the game is of the utmost importance, in order to best reflect the diversity of our society and provide access to the vast opportunities the game of golf brings on and off the course,” said Curry in a press release. “We are incredibly grateful to our partners at Andscape and Howard for providing us the opportunity to do so and shining a light on the team’s successes.”

Episodes started streaming on Aug. 21 on ESPN+ and ESPNU. Why Not Us: Howard Golf is the fourth installment in the docu-series and was created to inspire cultural diversity within sports. Previous programs featured include Florida A&M University’s football team,  Southern University’s Dancing Dolls, and North Carolina Central’s basketball team.
